Ayurvedic Herbs are Good Medicine

Monday, February 8, 2010
As medicine companies always say that their drugs are better, stronger, advanced and more effective and safe than herbs. I readily agree to the fact that modern drugs are stronger however, some drugs are too strong that it can have bad side effects that their herbal precursors might not have. Take ginger for instance, in some studies this Ayurvedic herb clearly performs better and has proved itself to be superior than pharmaceutical dimenhydrinate (Dramamine) which is a preventive drug against motion sickness.

I'm not skeptical about pharmaceuticals but sometimes its hard to say if we really are getting the best medicine. What I'm saying is that we need more research on the performance of herbs against medicinal drugs. Until that happens we won't clearly know which is more effective. That leads to the rather shocking conclusion from the Green Pharmacy by James A. Duke. According to the book, herbal therapies may, in many cases, prove to be more economical, more effective and safer. With fewer bad side effects compared to its medicinal counterparts.

Of course, the government will clearly favor the use of pharmaceutical rather than Ayurvedic herbs thanks to the restrictive drug approval process used by the U.S. authorities. But since the world is suffering from retrogression and monetary crisis, the challenge for us is to think for alternative ways of healing. Medical services are sky rocketing and still increasing in terms of cost. One perfect example of alternative remedy can be found in India, the practice known as Ayurveda from the ancient Indian people that teaches healthy living, healthy eating and doing things the healthy way. Just like what famous scientists suggest, using the living plants around us is the best way to deal common sickness and some other major health disorders.

The challenge brought upon us by Ayurveda is to think green-- not the mercenary, monetary green of pharmaceutical firms but the cleansing, empowering green of chlorophyll, the green that fees, fuels and oxygenates and medicates our planet.
